Giants Causeway Tour from Belfast Details

Our speciality. The Giants Causeway Tour from Belfast lasts around 7/8 hours and it flows a little like this. You tell us what time and where to collect you. We arrive shortly before the time stated and await your arrival, whether it is from a cruise ship terminal, hotel, airport or train station. We begin the tour by travelling towards the Dark Hedges. Onwards to Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge where you will walk down to the bridge taking in the spectacular landscape of the North Antrim Coast. Once at the bridge you make a crossing over one of Ireland’s most beautiful landmarks, roughly 50m above sea-water taking in the beautiful coastal line of the Emerald Isle.

Once finished we go to the historical landmark, Ballintoy Harbour where you get a brief stop over to again, take in the beauty of the North Antrim Coast. This was also a famous Game of Thrones film location, can you spot what part of the area was used?

Next we take a break for lunch. Roughly one hour for a refreshments break and to refuel for the second half of your day. We kick the second half of the day off with the Giants Causeway. We stay around here for roughly a hour/90 minutes so you can fully take in the beauty of the UNESCO landmark. A location we label as ‘As Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. We move swiftly onto the Bushmills Distillery where if you are on a cruise ship we allow for time to do tasting and if there are no time restrictions in place to get our guests back to the ship or for a train/plane. We allow for you to take the Bushmills Distillery tour which should last just over an hour, showing you the distillation process of one of Ireland’s oldest whiskeys.

The final portion of the tour consists of visiting Dunluce Castle an ancient castle ruin that still stands and finally Magheracross Viewing Point, possibly the best location for your experience photos to bring home and cherish.

As this is your experience, we always want to make sure that we are meeting and surpassing expectations on your day. If you wish to make any amendments, please get in touch, these do have to be agreed upon before the tour starts. Amendments may not always be possible but we’ll do our best to work with you to make the experience suited to your wishes.

Itinerary

8:45 - 9:00Meet & Introduction

We’ll meet at you at your desired pickup location. We gather this information from you during the booking process, alongside the desired time you wish to be picked up at. From there, we begin our day and make our way towards the North Antrim Coast to our first Northern Ireland landmark!

10:20 - 10:45The Dark Hedges

The first stop on your Giant’s Causeway Tour from Belfast. The Dark Hedges, located neatly within Northern Ireland’s country-side. It was never intended to be a tourist attraction, that all changed with its feature as ‘The Kings Road’ on the world famous show, Game of Thrones. Traditionally it was a five star entrance into Gracehill House, two centuries later, the trees are still standing and continue to impress any who travel through. They have become one of the most photographed locations throughout the whole of the country.

Featured in Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 1: The North Remembers and if I cast your memory back, Ayra Stark has escaped King’s Landing, all be it, disguised as a boy. She travels with Hot Pie, Grendy and a few others who are to join the Night’s Watch. She travels the King’s Road by cart as she tries to return home to safe ground. More information on the King’s Road and a Game of Thrones Location Tour, here.

This stop will last roughly 20/25 minutes where you can get out and walk the road from end-to-end, read the feature boards and explore the scenery. The trees have fallen victim to some of the weather we have here in Northern Ireland so keep an eye out for those ones too!

11:00 - 11:15Ballintoy Harbour

On the journey of your Giant’s Causeway Tour, Ballintoy Harbour is one of the stops prior to arriving at the Giant’s Causeway. This location is world famously known as the ‘Iron Islands’ from Game of Thrones. The Ballintoy Harbour situated along the North Antrim Coast. The Iron Islands is one of the constituents of the Seven Kingdoms from the Game of Thrones world famous TV series. The islands are home to a fierce group known as the ‘Iron Born’ and are ruled by the House of Greyjoy which makes visiting Ballintoy Harbour all the more exciting.

Ballintoy Harbour is traditionally known as a small fishing harbour down a steep road which passes by the entrance to Larrybane Quarry and Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge. We include this stop as it is an ideal tourist location to really get a feel for what rural Ireland is like and how the locals live day-to-day.

On top of the spectacular scenery this is truly one of the gems holding a piece of Irish History.

11:30 - 12:50Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge

On the journey of your Causeway day trip. The Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge is a featured stop along our Giant’s Causeway Experience. The Carrick-A-Rede rope bridge was first established in 1755 – nearly 265 years ago! In its day there was only one single hand rail and the odd wooden slate every few steps. It was highly unsafe and a real thrill seeker may have found the excitement in crossing. The bridge has massively evolved from then to create a safer experience whilst keeping the excitement and thrill of crossing intact. Located along a stretch of the North Antrim Coast, the Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge sits roughly 100 feet over the hollow waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The crossing is often considered daring and for thrill-seekers due to the bridges tendencies to sway in the wind and the drop from looking down. Year on year the bridge has seen an increase on the amount of visitors and recently the Rope Bridge advise that visitors book time slots a head of their journey to Carrick-A-Rede, this can be done via clicking here.

**Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge is now OPEN! – We will be in touch shortly after booking to assist you with purchasing tickets for the rope bridge if your group wish to cross** – Bookings for the rope bridge are currently 4 weeks in advance and can be done by clicking Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge tickets

1:00 - 2:00Lunch

We take a quick break for lunch. Your guide will discuss lunch options with you. Some prefer to bring a pack lunch, that’s completely fine. Your lunch, your choice!

2:10 - 3:30The Giants Causeway

The Giants Causeway, arguably Ireland’s most famous landmark. Perfectly located at the top of the island just a short distance from Ballycastle and located along a magnificent stretch of the North Antrim Coast.

The story of the Giants Causeway is an Irish myth that dates back around 5000 years and goes like so: Ulster is Ireland’s most north of its ancient Kingdoms. It had, rocky hills windy rivers and scooped-out lakes that look like they could have been carved by the hands of a giant. There are ancient stone tombs that have been made with huge boulders that couldn’t have been lifted by the average man.

There was once a giant known as Finn McCool whose fiercest enemy was in Scotland. He made a path using hexagonal stones that slotted neatly together all the way to Scotland to fight the Scottish giant. Throughout the tour you will hear in more detail what else Finn McCool had made for his stay at the Giants Causeway. These items will include the ‘Wishing Chair’, ‘The Giants Boot’ and ‘The Camel’. Your guide will tell you about the rock formations and fill you in on the ending of the Finn McCool Irish myth. This attraction is a fantastic asset and landmark that must be experienced. Are you ready for your experience?

3:40 - 3:50Dunluce Castle

The final stop of your Giant’s Causeway Tour from Belfast, the Dunluce Castle dates back as early as the 1500’s when the castle was seized by the MacDonnell clan. It was then passed over to the earls of Count Antrim in mid 1600’s where it was used to plan and establish the small town of Dunluce. The history of Dunluce is matched by some dramatic tales, there goes a story that the kitchens of Dunluce Castle were destroyed by a Banshee and later that night its kitchens fell into the ocean due to the storm.

To this day there is good access into Dunluce, the ruins have been well preserved tor the public to take a walk round and experience for themselves. It has become a popular destination on our tours and a popular tourist destination world wide. The stop over on our tour lasts roughly 30/40 minutes which tourists have found is more than enough time to get around the whole castle, take photographs and get back to their vehicle.

Dunluce Castle – Accessibility

Dunluce Castle is children friendly and does have disabled access throughout the castle once across the drawbridge. It is an easy walk for children and elderly, although we would recommend not letting young children out of sight – It is a cliff side ruin after all! There are also many places to sit and rest if you need to rest while wandering the grounds of the castle with the added bonus of a spectacular view of the Inner Seas off the West Coat of Scotland.

Building Dunluce Castle

Dunluce Castle was originally constructed by Richard Og De Burgh who was also known as “The Red Earl”. Richard was a known Irish noble in the early 1400’s. The cliff top castle was perfect positioning for the earl with great viewing angles from every corner of the castle to add protection, this was only right for at the time the highest ranked Earl on the island of Ireland! The daughter of Richard went onto be the second wife to King Robert the Bruce of Scotland! Dunluce Castle was a location of extensive history created and started by The Red Earl, history that is well documented and presented to you on arrival at the castle.

4:00 - 4:10Magheracross Viewing Point

A new stop added into our tour. The Magheracross Viewing Point gives us a spectacular view looking up the North Antrim Coast as far as the eye can see!

The purpose-built viewing platform offers panoramic views of the Causeway Coast’s stunning natural environment and coastal headlands.

Visitors to the view point can enjoy views of the iconic Dunluce Castle and the Skerries, as well as the vast sandy dunes of Whiterocks Beach – one of many Blue Flag awarded beaches in the Causeway Coast and Glens.
